Explore 400 years of history on New Hampshire’s seacoast, discovering the sites that preserve the region’s storied past and rich culture.
 
  1. Applecrest Farm Orchards (133 Exeter Road, Hampton Falls) The oldest continuously-operated apple orchard in America, Applecrest also offers visitors a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables. One of their latest ventures is a creamery featuring New Hampshire made ice cream!

  2. Exeter Town Hall (10 Front Street, Exeter) Settled in 1638, it’s no surprise Exeter is brimming with history. The American Independence Museum is located here and holds an original printing of the Declaration of Independence. Be sure to stop by the Exeter Town Hall to see where Abraham Lincoln spoke back in 1860.  

  3. Fort Stark Historic Site (211 Wildrose Lane, New Castle) Wind through the trails that meander through this former military installation, named in honor of John Stark, commander of N.H. forces at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.

  4. Star Island  (Portsmouth, NH) The only one of the nine Isles of Shoals accessible to visitors, Star Island offers spectacular scenery and fascinating island history that dates back to the 1600s when it was a busy fishing port.

  5. Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion (375 Little Harbor Road, Portsmouth) Discover the history of an 18th-century house and farm site, which stands as the only original surviving residence of a Royal Governor in the U.S., Benning Wentworth (1741-1767).

  6. Strawbery Banke (14 Hancock Street, Portsmouth) Explore the oldest European settled neighborhood in New Hampshire and watch as stories come to life through role-players, a collection of over 30,000 artifacts, and 32 historic buildings to visit.

  7. USS Albacore (569 Submarine Way, Portsmouth) Visit the permanent home of a unique research vessel which was used by the U.S. Navy in 1953-1972 to test experimental features used in modern submarines.  

  8. Woodman Museum (182 Central Ave, Dover) Stop in to this 20th-century natural science, history, and art museum, which features exhibits involving colonial artifacts, expansive militaria, native fossils, and fine art displays showcased throughout the museum.

  • Shop: In Portsmouth’s downtown center, dozens of retailers and small businesses line the cobblestone streets. Check out Ten Thousand Villages on Congress Street for worldly finds, crafts, and housewares. Or shuffle through the racks of consigned goods at Wear House on Market Street and discover the treasures waiting for you there.

  • Eat: Christopher’s Third Street Grille (16 3rd Street, Dover); Me and Ollie’s CafĂ© (64 Water Street, Exeter); Petey’s Summertime Seafood (1323 Ocean Blvd, Rye); Portsmouth Gas Light (64 Market Street, Portsmouth).
